WALHALLA

“Imagine if we could tap into those same archetypes without sacrificing our normality. Image the talents and powers we might unleash, ones that could transform human civilisation.

Imagine that an ancient society already once mastered such powers - the race that "myth" says populated Thule and Atlantis.”

Mike Hockney.

Scio looked at the over-awed citizens, pathetically scratching about in the palm of his hand. One puff and they would all be dead, swept from their insolent perch. Should he kill them? No, they were totally his now. He could afford to forgive them.

He laid them gently back down on the ground. Like ants they stared up at the dizzy heights from where the voice now came - a great voice, like thunder coming from Valhalla.

Walhalla Memorial

"As these stones join together, may all Germans strongly united."

"As these stones join together, may all Germans strongly united."

"Mögen, so wie diese Steine zusammenhängen, alle Deutschen kräftig zusammenhalten!"

King Ludwig at the Walhalla groundbreaking ceremony.

Ludwig first conceived the idea for a temple honoring German heroes in 1806. The purpose of such a Teutonic Pantheon was to remind the German-speaking peoples of their common heritage.

The Walhalla is a hall of fame that honours laudable and distinguished people in German history – "politicians, sovereigns, scientists and artists of the German tongue". Built decades before the foundation of the modern German state in 1871 and the formation of a modern German identity, "German" was initially understood as "Germanic", and included ancient Germanic (Gothic, Vandal, Lombardic, Anglo-Saxon) as well as medieval Dutch, Swedish and Russian figures. The hall is a neo-classical building above the Danube River, in Donaustauf, east of Regensburg in Bavaria.

The Walhalla is named for the Valhalla of Norse Paganism. It was conceived in 1807 by Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria in order to support the gathering momentum for the unification of the many German states. Following his accession to the throne of Bavaria, construction took place between 1830 and 1842 under the supervision of the architect Leo von Klenze. The memorial displays some 65 plaques and 130 busts covering 2,000 years of history, beginning with Arminius, victor at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9.

That is the official narrative.

The grandiose “monument” was constructed over a period of 12 years. It sits on a foundation of immense proportions and has 358 steps that lead down to a boat landing on the Danube. The architect, Leo Von Klenze was instructed to design a monument based on the Athenian Parthenon in Greek Revival style: an odd choice for a symbol of the unification of the disparate German states at the time.

Yet this and many others like it around the world point to something else: the revival of the geist of a time, not long ago, when the world was ruled by a society dedicated to excellence, knowledge and merit.

“The falsification of history has done more to impede human development than any one thing known to mankind.”

Jean-Jacques Rousseau
